Revolutions come on soft soles ... until they're here.

The AI we call askabl is the first general intelligence - meaning, it will not be restricted to one task, and will be able to compete with humans on many levels. For example: not only does it enable a computer to think critically and rationally - it even surpasses human intelligence, because it can read in new information exponentially faster, produces lots of text in an instance - all while never forgetting any detail.

But isn't that what ChatGPT does? - well, no, actually not (see below) - first of all, askabl is a general intelligence. On the basis of a model for thinking in general, the technology can be extended to all human mental faculties. That means, it ranges from exploring new reserach prospectives and ideas, to teaching any college class; it can be your everyday helper, or it can be your lawyer. It is one unified, comprehensive Artificial Intelligence - capable of everything a human is - with the benefits of a working at speeds many orders of magnitudes higher, perfect memory, making no mistakes ever, all while remaining totally objective.

Starting with language ...

We are focusing on natural language, as the primary way of expressing thoughts and ideas. askabl won't be like ChatGPG, which merely mimicks the way people talk, by having adopted millions of examples, while possessing no real, intrinsic intelligence - neural-network based AIs like ChatGPT kind of work like an animal who has learned a trick - and just like an animal, it does not have a real clue of what is doing. askabl does not need huge numbers of examples to mimick intelligence - it can think, originally, and on its own, just like a human being can. And the communication of its thinking via language will not just be a mere simulacrum - it will be the real deal. askabl's knowledge and capabilities will only be limited by the amount of computing power driving it, and access to information. For demonstration purposes, we will have askabl first read in the entirety of the English Wikipedia, which will result in the ultimate question-answering system. Later, we will add all of the (valuable) information on the web. After that, we will try to gain as much access to books as possible, as well as the state of the art in as many fields of science as possible - to best boast its knowledge and amplify the number of use case scenarios.

While it is absolutely possible for askabl to make jokes, or be your friend, these things are not our primary concern. We would like to put the technology to the best use possible - and we believe that humanity will be best served by an universal expert, that can both teach and explain even the most difficult topics, as well as come up with original ideas and new concepts to all of science.

askabl will bring about a bunch of new possibilities - everywhere, where spoken or written information is essential.

Here are some key features:

  • New ideas and concepts: askabl can form originally new ideas and thoughts on all topics - which is a step forward that is hard to underestimate. We are talking about suggestions to household problems, up to proposed solutions for the most advanced scientific challenges. askabl can also make deductions, recognize analogies, draw inferences, ... in short, everything the human intelligence can deliver, askabl will not only be able to keep up, but will surpass the human level, in regard to creativity, speed, accuracy, and sheer volume.
  • Precise answers: detailed responses to questions, especially highly focused and/or complex ones, like "What were the socio-economic implications of the French Revolution?" or "Where exactly lies the paradoxical element in the EPR-paradox?" Try this with a neural-net-based AI like ChatGPT, and you will soon find its limits ...
  • Truth and falsity: askabl can determine what's right and wrong, what's true and false. Also a fundamental step forward, since neural networks generally have no account of truth.
  • Customization: askabl can quickly read through all literature on a certain topic (e.g. a research problem), to advance ideas specific to a given issue, make suggestions, come up with solutions, etc. This is where neural networks fail: they are the definition of a one-trick pony (see a detailed comparison here)
  • Extendability: starting with the English Wikipedia, askabl can easily be expanded to any kind of text content, be it on the web, in book form, in magazines or science papers. askabl has been designed from the start with this capability in mind.

how it works

The project employs both new and old concepts within Artificial Intelligence. But the essential trick is not to rely on neural networks for the core intelligence. This may seem anachronistic, because neural networks are virtually synonymous with AI these days. Neural networks are employed in askabl, but only at its periphery, since they have drawbacks and limits - which is why we have come up with a model for thought in general. This approach is analytic - in the sense that it is completely transparent, unlike neural nets, whose inner workings are a black box. For a comparison, take a look here, or dive straight into the technicals.

a word about ethics ...

We are acutely aware of the potential of the technology, and the risk for abuse that comes along with it. As much as we love the "hacker spirit" of free-flowing information, there are too many, gravely dangerous scenarios conceivable, if our AI was completely open-source, and hence could be used for nefarious purposes. That is why, at least for now, the theory, the conceptual details, as well as the source code, are kept secret. Read more about our ethical rules in our mission statement.

There is absolutely no point in talking about the Terminator, Skynet or I, Robot. AIs like askabl do not have agency and free will, like human beings do. They are utterly agnostic in that regard: they do not want anything, as they do not need, desire, like, dislike, or feel at all. askabl's management layer as well as its core behave according to code that is entirely analytical (i.e. static). Hence, the chances of it taking over the world are just as little as a human walking on water.

Development stages

Of course, something like askabl doesn't happen overnight. In fact, it's been a concerted effort, spanning over ten years. The following is a brief overview of the stages we have already reached, and what is to come.

alpha stage

Basic idea and concept

beta stage

Proof of concept

gamma stage

Proof of work

delta stage

Coding a prototype

epsilon stage

Coding the first alpha for public use
